New ARaymond™ Quick Connector will enable SCR systems to operate in very cold weather in accordance with Euro 6 regulations
A heated Quick Connector solution developed by ARaymond* to help car and truck manufacturers comply with the latest EU emissions legislation is now available on the market.
Under the Euro 6 regulations, which came into force in 2015, the permitted level of nitrogen oxides (NOx) in the exhaust gases of new diesel-powered vehicles is capped at 0.08g/km. This is a reduction of 55 per cent compared to the Euro 5 standards.
To comply with previous anti-pollution legislation, the diesel engines of many trucks and utility vehicles were fitted with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems, which use an additive containing urea that is injected into the exhaust flow to convert NOx into less harmful gases or water.
The additive is stored in a separate tank in the vehicle and several manufacturers rely on ARaymond™ Quick Connectors to connect the tank to the SCR system. This solution, however, is not effective if the outside temperature is cold enough for the additive inside the connecting tube to freeze. Under Euro 6, SCR devices must be able to function in all weathers, which was not mandatory under Euro 5.
ARaymond has solved this problem by developing a Quick Connector fitted with a positive temperature coefficient (PTC) thermistor, which is able to generate heat when the outside temperature is cold. Thus, it is able to prevent the additive from freezing and disabling the SCR system.
The Key Account Manager in charge of the project said: “The PTC is contained in a simple backpack that can be fitted to standard Quick Connector in the ARaymond™ catalog.
“This means manufacturers can continue to use existing Quick Connectors, which is a more practical and more cost-effective solution than switching to the expensive integrated systems that some of our competitors have developed.”
Over the last 12 months ARaymond has worked closely with its partner Errecinque, a leading supplier of urea sender unit systems to the automotive industry, to perfect the prototype of the new heated Quick Connector and complete the testing and validation process prior to its market launch.
